‘Armenia’ Alliance Accuses Authorities of Repression and Intimidation Ahead of June 7 Vote
18 May 2026
“Armenia” Alliance issued a statement warning that the period leading up to Armenia’s June 7 elections is unfolding in an “unacceptably tense” political atmosphere that has moved beyond the boundaries of normal political competition.
The alliance accused the current authorities of attempting to silence political opponents, suppress free speech and dissent, deepen fear and internal hostility, and use administrative and law enforcement mechanisms to secure political reproduction ahead of the elections.
The statement also alleged selective justice, institutional repression, judicial dependence, public intimidation, hate speech, and unconstitutional conduct by the authorities, while criticizing international organizations for what it described as double standards and inadequate responses to developments in Armenia.
The full statement reads:
“The period leading up to the June 7 elections is unfolding in an unacceptably domestic tense political atmosphere and has clearly moved beyond the boundaries of political struggle.
Alongside growing public expressions rejecting the current regime, the authorities are attempting to silence political opponents, neutralize citizens’ freedom of speech, suppress free expression of will, and deepen an atmosphere of fear and internal hostility within the country.
The unconstitutional and criminally punishable conduct and methods adopted by the deepening authoritarian regime make free and competitive elections impossible.
The regime is pursuing only one objective: to secure its own reproduction through the unacceptable use of force and administrative resources against opposition forces and dissenting voices.
Serving this objective are punitive and unconstitutional actions that include:
• Criminal prosecutions and persecution, institutional repression.
• Selective justice and open abuse of administrative resources.
• Clear dependence of the judiciary, preventing unconstitutional actions by the authorities from receiving proper legal assessment.
• Open and public punitive instructions by the regime’s leader directed at the prosecution and law enforcement systems, including orders to imprison or punish political opponents.
• On May 17, 2026, an Armenian citizen hung himself in a psychiatric institution after being isolated by law enforcement one day earlier for allegedly damaging one of Nikol Pashinyan’s campaign posters./
• Public intimidation of society, individual citizens, and leaders of major opposition forces, including threats and calls for retaliation.
• Use of vulgar language, targeted attacks, hate speech, deepening internal division and hostility, and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
• On May 18, during a live broadcast, Nikol Pashinyan issued unprecedented threats against three main political opponents, as well as ordinary citizens, accompanied by calls for revenge and profanity-filled language.
Unfortunately, the double standards, biased approaches, and non-specific behavior of international organizations are deepening the atmosphere of impunity in Armenia, discrediting international institutions, undermining faith in democracy, and seriously calling into question the collective West’s genuine interest in the formation of a truly democratic government in Armenia.
We appeal to the embassies accredited in Armenia and to international organizations carrying out election observation missions, expecting an appropriate response and assessment.
We expect an urgent meeting to more thoroughly discuss, present, and assess the unconstitutional course adopted by the authorities.”
