The Ideological Education of an ARF Member

28 October 2026

By Hrayr Sherikian

Being a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) means more than simply belonging to a political party. Above all, it represents a conscious commitment to national awareness, ideological conviction, moral values, sacrifice, and responsibility.

The character of an ARF member must be firmly rooted in the fundamental principles of national ideology, an awareness of the historical rights of the Armenian people, a sense of responsibility toward the homeland, and a vision for national survival and development, particularly a dedication to service.

However, all these principles acquire their full meaning only when accompanied by universal human values: justice, honesty, tolerance, comradeship, respect for human dignity, and a commitment to public service. A national ideology attains its full value only when it serves not merely the collective interests of the nation, but also the dignity, freedom, and well-being of the individual.

From this fundamental understanding arises the primary obligation of an ARF member: to transform national identity into a conscious commitment and ideological conviction into consistent action. For an ARF member, these obligations are far greater than the responsibilities that ordinarily arise from national belonging.

Naturally, an ARF member is first and foremost a human being. Like everyone else, he or she has daily responsibilities, family obligations, work, studies, financial concerns, and personal difficulties. Yet more is expected of an ARF member.

Alongside personal responsibilities, an ARF member must develop a broad national perspective, possess a deep understanding of history, know the Armenian people’s past, understand the challenges of the present, and confront the uncertainties of the future with an informed outlook.

An ARF member must be familiar not only with Armenian history but also with the ideological heritage of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, its organizational development, revolutionary activities, the armed struggle of the fedayees, volunteer movements, historical achievements, struggles, and experiences.

But familiarity with history alone is not enough.

It is necessary to draw lessons from history, appreciate successes, examine mistakes, and transform past experiences into a guide for present action. Ideological conviction without knowledge can become blind adherence, while knowledge without moral responsibility can become empty theory.

Therefore, the education of an ARF member must simultaneously be national, ideological, intellectual, and moral. Such education, however, cannot be limited to the initial period of membership or to a particular series of courses. It must continue throughout one’s lifetime.

How does one prepare an ideologically mature ARF member? How is an individual shaped to consciously assume national and organizational responsibilities?

The answers to these questions are simple, but their implementation is lengthy and demanding.

Party education is not the work of a single day, a single meeting, or a single year. It is a continuous process that begins on the first day of membership and continues throughout life. Even a member with decades of organizational experience still has much to learn, study, and reassess.

The reason for this lies in the very nature of the organization.

Vahan Navasardian wrote in the section titled “The Ideology of the ARF,” in Hushapatum of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, 1890–1950 (p. 169):

“The ideological character of the ARF can be outlined on the basis of the following sources:

  1. The ARF’s declarations of principles;
  2. Its rules and regulations;
  3. The decisions of General Meetings, Regional Meetings, and Councils;
  4. The actions of the ARF;
  5. Its press;
  6. Its literature;
  7. Its prominent figures, both leaders and ordinary members;
  8. The memoirs and recollections they have left behind;
  9. The influence of foreign revolutionary forces, both in word and deed.

Only through a complete examination of these sources can one, as stated, draw a comprehensive picture of the ARF’s ideology. They must be examined fully, but not separately.

For it is only through the parallel study of all these sources, continually comparing, verifying, and supplementing them, that it may perhaps become possible to arrive at the truth.”

Throughout its long history, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation has operated under continuously changing political, national, and international circumstances. Each historical period has presented new challenges, new demands, and new responsibilities.

Consequently, party education cannot be limited to reading the ideological literature of the past or studying historical events. It must evolve in accordance with the demands of the times without losing its fundamental values and principles.

An ARF member must be capable of understanding contemporary political developments, international relations, the difficulties confronting Armenia and the Diaspora, social and economic demands, and the changing conditions under which Armenian national identity must be preserved.

All of this requires consistent reading, study, ideological discussion, and intellectual preparation. Yet knowledge acquires its full value only when it also develops independent thinking.

One of the primary objectives of party education must be the continuous development of the ability to think independently.

An ideologically prepared member is not someone who merely repeats what he has heard or uncritically accepts the views presented to him. On the contrary, a mature party member is someone who thinks, analyzes, asks questions, engages in discussion, and supports his convictions with knowledge and reason.

Party discipline and freedom of thought must not be placed in opposition to one another.

The strength of a healthy organization lies in the ideological awareness of its members, mutual trust, and responsible participation.

Ideological unity does not mean uniformity of thought. On the contrary, healthy discussions of differing viewpoints can enrich an organization’s internal life, develop its political thinking, and strengthen the quality of collective decisions.

For this reason, party education must prepare not merely members who follow instructions, but conscious, responsible, and proactive individuals.

And a proactive and responsible individual must express his ideas not only through words, but also through conduct and action.

National ideology cannot be complete if it is devoid of human values.

Patriotism is not measured solely by spoken words, loud declarations, or displays of respect for national symbols. It is reflected in a person’s daily conduct, honesty, sense of duty, fairness, and responsibility toward society.

An ARF member must embody, through personal example, the very values he advocates.

He cannot demand justice in national life while acting unjustly in his personal relationships. He cannot preach national unity while creating intolerance and division among those around him. He cannot speak of sacrifice while being unwilling to contribute his personal time, work, and abilities to public service.

In this sense, ideological education must become an education of character.

As Hrach Dasnabedian wrote in his book The Evolution of the ARF Organizational Structure and Other Studies (p. 209):

“Idealism, complemented by the complete dedication of one’s own person. Activism, dynamism, militancy, and courage. Determination and an unlimited readiness for sacrifice in pursuit of collective objectives. Selflessness, integrity, honesty, modesty, mutual comradeship, love, and care. An understanding of discipline that is not merely formal and regulatory, but fundamentally revolutionary and moral.”

Being an ARF member must be expressed not only through words, but also through attitude, action, and personal example.

When ideological conviction is joined with moral character, it becomes a force for public service. And that service finds its natural expression in the responsibilities assumed toward Armenia and the Diaspora.

One of the most important components of an ARF member’s ideological education is the spirit of comradeship.

The designation “comrade” is not merely a form of address within an organization. It embodies the principles of mutual respect, trust, equality, and responsibility.

True comradeship requires the ability to listen, respect differing opinions, stand by one another in difficult times, and place the collective interest above personal ambition.

The strength of an organization is not measured solely by the number of its members. It is also measured by their preparedness, internal trust, moral character, and ability to work together.

An organization that fails to cultivate a culture of healthy discussion, mutual respect, and responsibility among its members risks weakening its ideological foundations over time.

Therefore, party education must also contribute to the development of a healthy organizational culture.

Such a culture must encourage participation, initiative, mutual assistance, and a responsible attitude toward collective decisions.

Only in such an environment can ideological education achieve its ultimate purpose: transforming knowledge and conviction into practical service.

FROM EDUCATION TO ACTION

The ultimate value of ideological education becomes evident in practical life.

Reading, lectures, meetings, and discussions are necessary means, but they are not ends in themselves. Their purpose is to prepare individuals capable of transforming their knowledge into work that benefits society.

An ARF member must be able to take initiative, assume responsibility, cooperate with others, and contribute his abilities to national and community service.

The success of party education is measured not only by a member’s knowledge, but also by his actions, moral character, and the trust he inspires within society.

Thus, the entire process of education, from the study of history to independent thinking, from human values to the spirit of comradeship, serves one fundamental objective: to prepare ARF members capable of transforming their convictions into responsible and meaningful action.

CONCLUSION

The ideological education of an ARF member is a continuous and multifaceted responsibility.

It requires national awareness, historical knowledge, ideological preparation, political maturity, moral character, and profound respect for human values.

Alongside all these qualities, humility, self-criticism, and a constant willingness to learn are equally essential.

No individual can consider himself fully prepared, and no organization can develop if its members cease to think, study, and reassess their experiences.

The historical legacy of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation can remain vital only as long as its ideals are translated into conscious, responsible, and morally grounded action.

For an ARF member, therefore, ideological education must not be merely a party obligation. It must become a way of life, an expression of national consciousness, and a path toward continuous personal improvement.

For the true strength of an ideology lies not only in its history or its proclaimed principles, but in the character and actions of those who strive to bring those principles to life through their daily conduct.

Ideological strength begins with the conscious individual, develops through responsible comradeship, and proves its worth through service to the nation and humanity.
